My Project

I teach a self-contained special education class with amazing students in grades 3-6 who have diverse learning needs. My students thrive in hands-on, engaging activities that support their academic, social-emotional, and behavioral development. Many of my students struggle with traditional learning methods, but they excel when given opportunities to build, create, and collaborate.

Despite their challenges, my students are eager to learn and grow.

They benefit from structured activities that encourage problem-solving, creativity, and teamwork. Unfortunately, our classroom lacks the resources to provide these experiences consistently. That’s where LEGO bricks can make a huge difference!

Academic Benefits: LEGOs encourage STEM learning by helping students explore engineering concepts, spatial reasoning, and problem-solving skills. Building with LEGOs improves fine motor skills, which are essential for writing, cutting, and other classroom tasks. LEGOs provide hands-on opportunities for students to practice following directions, sequencing, and engaging in critical thinking while working on step-by-step instructions.

Social-Emotional Benefits: Working with LEGOs fosters collaboration and teamwork, teaching students how to take turns, share, and communicate effectively. Building projects boost confidence and perseverance, as students see their ideas come to life. LEGOs provide a creative outlet for self-expression, helping students manage emotions and reduce stress in a productive way.

Behavioral Benefits: LEGOs serve as a positive reinforcement tool, motivating students to engage in tasks and meet behavioral expectations. The structured yet open-ended nature of LEGO play helps students practice patience, focus, and persistence. LEGOs can be used for calming and sensory regulation, providing a constructive break when students feel overwhelmed.
