This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My first project was called "Snacks and Souvenirs" and it helped me launch a road trip/travel theme in my English 11 classroom. Students have responded so well to the snacks and button maker, I want to keep the momentum going with "Building Bridges."

2022-2023 is year fifteen of my teaching career.

Each year as I prepare my classroom and my mind for new students, I reflect on the staff and students that paved the way for the current year. I have been blessed to work closely with over 3,500 students and I hope to work with 3,500 more in my career. My vision is to hang one 8x10 frame on my classroom wall for each year of my career. Each frame will be a list of the names of the students who had the strongest impact on their class and on me. By making my years in the classroom and the names of former students visible, I hope to send a powerful nonverbal message to the students of 2022-2023 and every year after. Our work today matters.

Some of the items listed will help me continue to fuel the Snacks and Souvenirs project, and the rest will help me visually bridge past, present, and future students. So often in high school, I felt like a number to a teacher who was simply counting down the days until retirement. I began this journey determined to be fully committed until the very end. Help me keep my mental map oriented toward what matters the most - students - in a way that students will see and feel each day.
