My Students

We are 2/3 teachers in Manhattan. We are working family school and have a diverse population of kids from across the boroughs. We are school who values the arts, creative writing, dance, project-based learning and progressive models. As a 2/3 cohort, we like to bring Social Studies and Science into our classrooms through projects and hands-on STEM activities. In the past we have been able to bring students out into the world and have them experience New York City's museums, parks, bridges and culturally-diverse neighborhoods.

Covid restrictions impede our ability to bring kids out into the city on field trips, and so we are trying to bring New York City into our classrooms through hands-on projects and subscriptions to magazines that help us to envision the incredible stories, images, and engineering phenomena of our city.

My Project

Our 2nd and 3rd Graders didn't get the opportunity to experience NYC during the pandemic, and many restrictions still apply to our field trips. We want to teach kids all about NYC and Bridges through hands-on project-based STEM curriculum and need materials!

All of these materials will help students create, test, retest, learn about, collect data, and build their own bridges in our classroom as we learn about all of the different structural ways to create bridges.

Students will be able to replicate not only our city's bridges, but be able to compare them to famous bridges around the world! Part of this study is also the IMPACT building bridges has on the environment, people, and places. These impacts can be both good and bad. One of our Essential Questions along with "How does one build a bridge?" is "How can bridges bring people together as well as segregate communities of people?"
