Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The 7th graders at my school are eager to learn new ideas and apply their content knowledge to real-life problems. They enjoy working in collaborative group activities where they learn from one another to achieve a common goal. They also use class time efficiently and are actively engaged in the learning process.

My students understand that doing mathematics requires a growth mindset.

They like to experience new concepts through multiple modalities, such as visual, musical, and bodily/kinesthetic. This year, I would like them to develop their mathematical vocabulary to better understand word problems. They are implementing the three-reads strategy and participating in math talks to use new vocabulary words in context.

My Project

The Bridge Design Competition is a project-based learning unit where students learn about the importance of bridges. Bridges serve many purposes. Most importantly, they connect people to resources, places, and other people. This competition will challenge students to become civil engineers.

Students will emerge themselves in authentic learning experiences to explore beam, truss, arch, suspension, and cable-stayed bridges.

Students will need to consider how forces, loads, materials, and shapes affect bridge structures. They will work in collaborative groups of four. The group roles will include a presenter, artist, recorder, and writer. Together, they will follow the engineering design process to tackle a bridge challenge of their choice.

Students participating in the Bridge Design Contest will (a) Learn about the engineering design process through a realistic, hands-on problem-solving experience. (b) Apply math, science, and technology to create devices and systems that meet human needs. (c) Develop perseverance and time management skills. (d) Develop strong teamwork skills.
