This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In Connecticut, our legislators have decided that engaging in play-based learning is essential to student development and success. However, our curriculum doesn't provide many tangible resources for students in my grade 3 class to engage in such learning. My students were able to take a virtual Lego field trip in the Discovery Education platform and they were inspired by the buildouts they saw and expressed the desire to create Lego structures of their own. That is why we are requesting your help, to make their Lego dreams a reality.

Using Legos is a play-based approach that enhances STEM skills while promoting critical thinking and teamwork and ultimately supporting early brain development.

When children build with Legos, they must figure out how the pieces fit together to create structures, promoting neural connections related to spatial awareness, logic, and mathematics, as well as, helping to develop fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination and social-emotional growth as students communicate and work together. Most of the Lego kits selected focus on topics such as landmarks and animals which students have learned about in their literacy, science & social studies curriculums this school year. We've also requested 2 base kits and a book of project ideas which will allow students to challenge themselves and think outside of the box. The plan is for small groups of students to use the engineering design process as they work on simpler Lego projects and graduate to more difficult builds, with adult assistance as necessary. Play-based learning with Legos will be a fun and collaborative way to engage students and extend their learning.
