This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
The students I work with are some of the brightest spirits I have ever met. Growing up in the Black Belt Queen City of Selma, they see history around them daily. From their grandparents, many of whom served in the Civil Rights Movement, to the historic halls of the once segregated school in which they walk. These students are bright minds and spirits, but they suffer from the historical denigration of living in Alabama's Black Belt. Living in a town that's history shaped the Civil Rights Movement, these students and their educational gains have largely been forgotten. When coupled with the emphasis placed on STEM education, many of these student's literacy skills suffer.
The students in my African American Lit class need opportunities to express themselves and what better way than to chronicle their lives in the region by creating their own memoir.
My students need supplies to help this reach fruition. The supplies will not only help my students this year, but also many years to come as they grapple with their place as Black youth in America and what exactly that means for their present, and the collective future we dream and wish to build.
My Project
These materials will ensure that these students have everything necessary to create meaningful literary works that show their wonderful diverse lives in a way that brings life and truth to their unique regional Black stories.
By supporting this project, you are empowering a group of students to move above and beyond simply remembering and talking about their stories and histories, to getting them out on paper and bringing them to life.
In doing this, they can root their present in their past family legacies, and chart a future that takes them beyond what society has dictated for them and their success.
