PS116Q, The William C. Hughley School, is located in an impoverished section of Jamaica, Queens. The growing population of 825 students is also 85% free lunch. My students are children between the ages of 10 and 14 and, at this point, they are locked out of the ability to enjoy literacy. Most of my students are reading at a 2nd or 3rd grade reading level. As sad as that is, they are required to read books that are interesting but written at the actual grade level that they are in, so they don't even understand the vocabulary. Unfortunately, the only books that are at my student's reading level are books about primary subjects and beginning chapter books. This lowers my students' self-esteem as they are forced to read books that are of no interest to them, and their higher functioning peers tease and dehumanize them about having to use these lower level books. My solution to this is to buy high interest, low level books and audio CDs. I believe that these materials will allow me to teach my students fundamental reading strategies and open up the door of literacy to them while building self-esteem and allowing my students to keep their self-respect. In addition to the books and audio materials, my intention is to create an interactive reading center with manipulatives and sight words activities in the classroom that will enhance their knowledge of the written word. I need your assistance so that my 25 students will be able to enter the world literate and confident, with the ability to understand, question and contribute to the world around them in the present and in their future. These books and audio materials will be used for years to come. They can also be shared with the grade as our literacy periods are not the same. These materials will help to foster self-esteem and create the building blocks for so many. Thank you for helping to teach my students. They will one day grow up to be fine citizens, just like the people they will learn to read about in their books.
