My Students

My students are from a suburban school in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Our school is made up of kindergarten through sixth grade, approximately 400 students. Students I work with are in need of reinforcing their reading skills through the use of effective, research-based strategies to help build their literacy skills in phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension.

When students are engaged, their learning is maximized!

I would like to immerse my students' learning through the use of games to build necessary reading skills. A stimulating learning environment is imperative to build these skills. The use of games and interactive tools will help my students to acquire these skills and gain confidence in their reading ability in the process.

My Project

Phonological awareness is the ability to detect and manipulate the sound structures of a spoken language. At a very young age students must become aware that our language is made up of individual sounds or phonemes. They must then learn to manipulate them and have the ability to recall the rules that govern our language. This understanding of how phonemes combine to form words is initiated from the beginning of a child's education.

Do you remember the fun you had playing a childhood game?

The games I am requesting will help my struggling readers to acquire the skills needed to grow into confident, independent readers.

With the help of these games, students will gain a full range of phonemic awareness skills, which will help them to read and spell.
