Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Our students think the world begins and ends at the borders of their neighborhood of the city. They are high-poverty middle schoolers who often don’t even get to explore their own city. The wider world is not even within their grasp. This lack of prior knowledge often traps them in a cycle of low achievement and small dreams. The families in our community have little money (95% of our students receive free lunch) and the homes often lack educational resources. “Time for Kids” would provide our students with a window to the world. Our school believes in the education of the whole child, and encourages their building dreams for their future.

Our students loved the educational activities we planned around the recent election. They are intrigued by both current events and information about other cultures. They would benefit from exposure to more news from here and abroad. We currently don’t have the materials to incorporate this area into classes such as Literacy or Social Studies.

A classroom subscription to “Time for Kids” news magazine would allow us to bring the world into the classroom. We could incorporate the news into all major subjects, using stories to illustrate the real-world connections to Math, Science, Social Studies, and Literacy. Learning about other cultures and parts of the world would provide our students with a knowledge base which would enable them to do well not only on assessment tests, but also in their lives.
