My Students

My school is a Head Start/Pre-K Counts Program in a bilingual school that connects with the School District. Many of our families come from diverse backgrounds; cultures, languages, religions, family make-up. When parents meet me, their expectation for their children usually is to learn the basics: letters, numbers, shapes, and colors. To parents’ surprise, when their children are ready to move up to kindergarten, they have also learned how to manage their emotions when dealing with a difficult situation, whether it be a dispute amongst a peer; or what to do if a pile of blocks fell over on accident.

When my preschool students, 3-5 year olds, walk into my classroom, they are immediately greeted with hugs and smiles.

Considering common distractions, such as tablets, phones, and tv, my competition is to be more engaging and interesting than the games on their electronic devices.

Because child’s play is their work, it is my job to ensure a fun and safe environment, with lots of age-appropriate, hands-on activities, games and toys. Essentially, they would meet such goals; social-emotional, physical, language, arts, and cognitive.

My Project

My students have close to two hours daily for Free Play where they choose to play in learning centers. A few choices they have to choose from are Blocks, Writing Center, and Manipulatives/Math Center. The purpose of these centers go beyond fine motor skills, which is an important skill to develop especially in the early stages of childhood. But as a Preschool teacher, I’m also focusing and amplifying on building up preschoolers’ social and emotional skills.

By allowing my students to engage with the toy people, family set, magnetic letter boards, and peg boards; they will learn to share, initiate and engage in peer play and conversation, and manage their emotions through play.
