My Students

We have a wonderful 2nd-grade class! They are kind, thoughtful, and love to learn together as a small community. They come to school ready to learn and to brave the new experiences ahead of them. In second grade we have the saying "Practice Makes Better" and we are always practicing our math facts, spelling words, and phonemic awareness. Students work really hard each day with comprehension, phonics, and fluency as they read picture and beginning chapter books. They love to have hands-on experience with numbers and shapes as they focus on math standards.

My Project

Our new Superintendent has challenged teachers to create a “book-rich” environment in every classroom. Book access is a significant factor in literacy development. Research shows that students in classrooms with high-quality classroom libraries read 50 percent more than students who do not have access to a library in the classroom. Teachers are encouraged to be “choosy” about the books in a classroom library and to avoid purchasing every outdated and dog-eared book from yard sales. Students need to get excited about the books in the classroom library. Having a high-quality classroom library would allow me to present and display books in enticing ways that encourage and prompt interest, dialogue, and thinking. I will use these books not only in the classroom library but as read alouds as well, where we can focus on story elements and character traits. The 2 sets that are requested include wonderful texts that can be used with different comprehension lessons and then put back into the classroom library for the kids to enjoy. With a growing classroom library, the buzz about books in our classroom will bloom!
