I teach in a rural county populated by farms and commuters to the nearby larger city. Although our second graders may seem to be the typical country kids, it does not mean that they are not technologically literate.

To engage these 21st century learners, I am finding that learning works best when it is presented in a visual, kinesthetic manner. That is where the interactive whiteboard comes into play. My students have had some experience with this type of equipment, and wow, what an experience that was! Instead of students gathered around one computer, or even viewing a website through a projector, we were THERE, practically IN the website! However, there is only one of these types of boards in our school for 6 grades to share.

When a student plays a game on a website, or looks at a picture, it is neat experience. Imagine, though, that instead of using a mouse to manipulate things on the website, using your fingers and hands instead. It's like reaching into the computer and immersing yourself in the site! It's not only the Internet that you can have these kinesthetic experiences with the interactive board. There are programs and software to download and create your own experiences, to make it more personal for your class.

With your help, my students, as well as other students in our school, can experience the interactive whiteboard and all its possibilities! Please consider making a donation to our project to help us become one step closer to becoming not only 21st century learners, but to encourage more fun in the classroom through the use of technology!
