My Students

Many children need to practice good communication skills and cooperation. However, a First Grader's school day is so demanding academically that these essential social skills are often overlooked. But not any longer!

My students are 51, yes 51, Fabulous Firsties that spend their days learning through the global lens of the International Baccalaureate curriculum.

Their days are spent in two classrooms with two teachers--one for literacy and another for Math. This year's bunch of Firsties are particularly inquisitive and committed, which makes my job so much fun!

My Project

The Firsties will use the bristle bricks, legos, chain reaction machines, magnetic design shapes, and other assorted games and building materials during their work activity time. As they spend the last 20 minutes of each day participating in creative play together, the students will practice and master the beauty of cooperation! Small groups will practice caring conversations, sharing, inviting new friends to play, trying new activities, and expressing themselves. The materials through this project will build the perfect setting for these cooperation and social skills to be built. In addition they are in dire need of dependable technology in our classroom, that is available for research projects. The iPads will be used for group projects, and interactive learning opportunities!

Finding the balance between developing skills of 21st century learners and promoting positive social interactions is a daily struggle in a modern classroom, but that is exactly what this project seeks to perfect!

These materials will enhance the computer literacy of our first graders, while also providing a plethora of hands on activities which allows them to engage in play and creativity together!
