This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The goal of this project is to teach what algorithms are to my 9th grade social media students through experiential learning. This is a difficult concept to teach, and a tangible tools such as LEGO kits will assist in the learning process.

It is extremely important that students understand how algorithms work, and the connection between real life and social media algorithms.

Understanding how algorithms work in social media is essential because they shape the content we see, influence our behavior, and affect our opinions and relationships.

In this hands-on and project based activity, students will have a LEGO Algorithm challenge: they will build a LEGO creation using an algorithm. In groups, students will be the "programmer" or the "computer." Using step by step instructions, or an algorithm, they will build the Lego creation. Once students complete their builds, they will find discrepancies and "debug.” This will then be tied to how social media algorithms work.

Through this lesson, my students will understand algorithms and they will become more digitally literate. They will also be able to take steps to influence their algorithms and reduce their susceptibility to manipulation, as well as encourage a more balanced and healthy approach to social media.
