My Project

Math is often best learned when students are active participants which is often difficult to accomplish with high school level math. I have tried to incorporate hands-on activities into my classroom to not only build algebraic skills but to increase communication, collaboration, problem solving, and teamwork skills. Recently, I purchased Lego dupes from the dollar store for students to complete various projects. With one student as the builder and the other as the director, students had to learn how to communicate together to complete the project. Problem solving was naturally occurring and all students were engaged with no behavior issues. With the success of this activity and the request from the students to have more hands-on activities, I went on a search to learn ways to teach Algebra concepts using Legos.

Legos can be used to teach addition of like terms, solving equations, exponents, factoring, area/volume, fractions, and so many more Algebra and high-level math topics.

Through various activities my students will use Legos to be able to visualize math concepts, improve, problem solving, collaboration and communication skills. Due to the cost of Legos, I am seeking assistance in building a classroom set to use as we begin new topics. While many of these concepts can be taught virtually, I feel students need to have the tactile experience to fully understand the concepts.

Research has shown that math is the leading cause of learners dropping out of high school and college. It is important to find alternative ways to teach math concepts. as many math concepts seem like abstract ideas, rules that don't always make sense, and memorization without a foundational understanding. Researchers have shown that students who learn math concepts with manipulatives are able to retain the information much longer than those who are taught via lectures.

Math can be fun and it is my desire to create a math classroom that is fun, engaging, and a place of self-discovery.
