My students are from a rural area and most come from very disadvantaged homes which makes learning more challenging because they have many stressors from home.
For all students, engagement is a key component for learning but especially for students from disadvantaged homes.
Research has shown that student engagement is higher when students work in small groups on vertical whiteboard surfaces. I have found this to be true but the struggle we have had is when the math requires graphing. The vertical surfaces we have do not work for graphs or coordinate grids. The magnetic graph whiteboards will allow groups of students to continue to display their thinking when doing these types of problems.
Science can be highly engaging when it’s not from a book only. The microscope and the agar kit will allow my students to conduct experiments to test the most germ contaminated environments as well as best cleaners and to get a close look at the microscopic environment that is around them.
