Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students come from various backgrounds and include different types of learners. They include 11 and 12-year-old students who often come from low-income households and feel that our school is a safe, welcoming, and often comforting environment for them. My co-teacher and I are often trying to find ways in which to expand their minds beyond Queens, New York and this includes housing and exploring all types of literature in our classroom library to provide them access to such text. The bookcases will allow us to organize a broad variety of genres and multi-cultural literature for our students to become life long readers!

Our class specifically is an English Language Arts classroom and we often read articles and short stories in which we ask our 90 students to annotate students to get them to think outside the box, and to make real-world connections to the text, and they often struggle to buy the necessary supplies i.e highlighters and post-its to engage in the grade appropriate text.

These supplies also aid our students with disabilities and English Language Learners who may struggle to comprehend the text without proper annotation.

Additionally, our school is located in area that was greatly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and many of our students are still wearing mask to feel protected from the disease. My co-teacher and I take the safety and health of our students very seriously and would like to have supplies such as lysol wipes, air fresheners, and hand sanitizers readily available for them at all times to make their learning environment as comfortable for them as possible.
