My Students

I have had the pleasure of working as an educator with the same district for more than a decade. It has brought me happiness to experience and be a part of the great achievement the school district has made with academic achievement. Overall, the students I service are the most fragile students, and schools are closer to academic proficiency than ever before. One area that is lacking is the Social Emotional Learning.

My students want to learn, but are often distracted by external stimuli and circumstances beyond their control.

The reality is that our schools is situated in a poverty-stricken, crime-ridden neighborhood. Our students are often products of generational struggles they cannot readily comprehend. Development in Social Emotional Learning would provide a foundation for me,

My Project

I am requesting professional development that will provide me with the tools and strategies I can use to assist me with providing a safe place for my students to want to learn. English Language Arts/ Reading is the content area that I focus on; however, my students are not motivated due to issues ranging from not being able to read, to distractions in their poverty stricken neighborhood. The key lies with Social Emotional Learning.

Academic achievement is nearly impossible if students and teachers do not build relationships, and do not connect on interpersonal levels.

Attending professional development at a school that specializes in building up students, while excelling, would enhance my skill set. The knowledge that I gain, I will be able to be put to use immediately, and I can readily share the strategies I learn with my colleagues to make a greater impact.
