Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

COVID-19 has impacted the academic, social and emotional learning for students in my school and in my classroom over the past 3 years in many way that has created hurtles for learning. Over the last 3 years students have missed days, weeks, months or even years of exposure to learning within the classroom environment. This experience is crucial for learning the social norms and cues that students gain from being with their peers in a learning environment. The classroom provides structured cooperative and hands on learning activities that give students the skills to not only learn content, but also how to listen with intent, take turns, be accountable. Through the COVID years students lacked routine due to entering the classroom after weeks or months of absences. They often feel "behind" which is manifested though unexpected behaviors. Students may feel unsafe in group settings and lack the routine and stability that the classroom provides. The jump from social distancing to the classroom setting can also be confusing. The materials I am requesting are to support the structured cooperative learning activities to provide students with daily hands on learning in reading, writing, math, art, and STEM projects. The pop-its, magnetic bingo chips, wands, and cars are for hands on phonemic awareness kit where students manipulate materials with onset consonants, vowels and ending consonants (CVC words). These are fun and interactive ways to get students to read. The balance balls are for alternative seating for students who need to move while sitting. I included several read aloud books that help students understand some of the emotions they struggle with and give them strategies to navigate the social and emotional roads they encounter. The rug, pillows, seating and organizational materials are to give students safety and a place they can call "their" space.
