This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

This is my second year as an Occupational Therapist at an Elementary School in the Bronx with a growing Special Education program. These students have been diagnosed with Autism, and each child has their own unique needs. They experience many different emotions/sensory stimulations throughout the day that can impact their attention, learning, and engagement. Sometimes, they may need to calm their bodies by using a crash pad, doing yoga poses on the mats, or sitting in a sensory chair or a bouncy ball. Sometimes, the stimulation in their environment is too much (too loud or too bright), and a child may need noise-canceling headphones or a sensory tent for a few minutes before returning to the classroom/auditorium/lunchroom.

Building a sensory room for students is vital for their development and learning, especially at a young age.

It will provide tools to help them positively explore and regulate their feelings and sensory needs.

As K-1st graders, my students are curious about the world around them. They are constantly growing, and a sensory room will help improve their focus, learning, and interaction with their classmates, teachers, and parents to have a successful school year!
