My Students

I teach a self-contained classroom with high school aged students. My students present with a variety of disabilities. I teach every subject to the students, including: Math, English, Science, History, as well as Life Skills, and also organize a variety of community experiences for them. The most popular part of the curriculum includes the trips to various locations within our community.

Although my students may struggle in the classroom with basic tasks and life skills, their extraordinary character and desire to contribute allows them to excel within the community.

Over the course of the last several years, I have embarked on a variety of different experiences with my students.

My students learn in various different ways. They learn best, however, through hands-on, kinesthetic activities. Throughout the curriculum, we work on many different science experiments, art projects, and differentiated activities.

My Project

I am hoping to receive funding to have the opportunity to go to this conference so I can learn various strategies to teach my students about the importance of community, as well as how to manage their emotions, and various responsibilities that may arise over their lifetime.

Having the ability to manage one's emotions, interpret social situations, and cope with stressful scenarios are all social-emotional skills that my students require support with.

Social-emotional learning is a pivotal life skill that at times may be lacking in our schools' curriculums. Social-emotional learning is arguably more important than academic material learned in the classroom. Hopefully, during this conference I can learn strategies that I can utilize in my classroom to help my students develop the skills they need to effectively deal with conflict, manage their emotions and develop healthy relationships with peers and adults.
