Building a Raspberry PI Cluster, It's a Tasty Treat!

My students need Raspberry PI accessories. My school ordered 30 Raspberry PIs and some cabling but not everything we need! Most important are the SD cards with Raspbian Linux installed, USB Power Supplies and spacers.

My Students

I have taught AP Computer Science and AP Calculus for over 30 years to gifted classes of Juniors and Seniors. Several Juniors from last year's AP Computer Science class will be taking Computing Independent Study with me this year as Seniors.

My Studnets need your help to build our Linux Cluster aka SuperComputer!

Each year we come up with an advanced topic to explore that involves installing special hardware and software. Most of our projects over the years also involve coding in a new environment.

My Project

We have used PCs in the past, but this year the PC Lab is unavailable, so we will use Raspberry PIs instead. When the new Raspberry PI 3.0 B+ is paired with the NOOBs Operating System we will have a perfect solution for our project.

My students plan to conduct a research project about Linux Cluster Operating Systems and Programming Languages by networking 30 Raspberry PI single-board computers.

We will learn about Public Key Athentication and openSSH networking. We will install openMPI compilers to write code in FORTRAN, C, C++ and Python. Then we will make Fractal and Ray Tracing Art as well as Computer Generated Animations.

The SD Cards include NOOBs which is based on the Raspbian Linux OS and Python. Python is very easy to use for our cluster programs and Linux is easily customization as a Distributed Grid Cluster development environment!
