This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My students live in a low income neighborhood. They are in 3rd grade, age 8-9 years old. This year we eat lunch very late in the day- at 12:40. Students have breakfast at 7:30am (if they even make it to school early enough to have time to eat breakfast at all). That is 5 hours without any food or snacks. Many of them are hungry by 11:30 and their focus changes. I would love to provide snacks for them but it is too pricey to do on my own everyday.

The books are ones in which are lower level, because I have many ESL students and lower level readers in my class this year.

Lots of the books in our library and too difficult for my students or they are unengaging. Having fun, relevant books that are a good level is key to helping students develop a good reading life and relationship with ELA.
