You may see children squealing with delight at the size of their block towers or sighing in frustration as it topples over. The art of block building offers children a multitude of learning experiences. Block building is a natural activity for children. With blocks, children can reconstruct, on a small scale, aspects of their environment. They gain first hand experience with size and shape relationships and increase their understanding of the world around them. In addition, children learn to solve problems as they construct with blocks. They expand their expressive language as they talk about building and constructing and learn to cooperate as they accept the work of others. Block play helps children develop logical thought processes and provides many opportunities to handle and manipulate a variety of blocks and other materials. In doing so, they construct physical knowledge about spatial relationships and sharpen their cognitive skills as they learn to compare, measure, count, sort and classify. An added bonus is the fact that block play provides a basic foundation for language and literacy through labeling and naming structures and acquiring new vocabulary related to building. Block play also gives children the opportunity to enhance self-esteem through planning and working with other children and realizing that there are no right or wrong ways to play with blocks. I work with special needs children in a Pre-K classroom at a Title I low income school. In our block center we have some blocks but I would like to expand the opportunities for my students in this center. I am in need of materials to do this. We would love to have the extras to add excitement to our block center. I am writing this proposal in hopes to get a Wooden Block Town Set, Farm Blocks Set, Hotel Block Set, Road Builder Set, Garage Playset and Jr. Construction Play set. It would be wonderful to add these to our block center. They will provide many hours of learning fun for many many years. Thank you for considering my proposal.
