Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am entering my 4th year as a 3K-5th grade instructional literacy coach at a school in a low income high need community. I am lucky to be able to work with over 600 students and their teachers at my school as a staff developer.

Our students greatly represent our strong and confident BIPOC community.

As a school whose vision and mission builds the foundation for leadership development, our students strive to and have become amazing leaders by taking ownership of their learning, creating and accomplishing goals, and building exceptional public speaking skills thus preparing them to be essential representatives of their BIPOC community to continuously help other find their voice!

My Project

This set of diverse picture/chapter books will help me fine tune my instructional coaching as I model lessons and support classroom teachers with books that represent our student community.

As a school with a large BIPOC population, I want to ensure that our teachers are using books that not only provide optimal opportunities to explicitly model reading and writing strategies to support student academic needs but also provide our students with access to books that represent who they whether it is race, gender, socioeconomic status, etc.

Building a library as an instructional coach is essential as it will provide me with a wide variety of books to support student learning, I will be able to read through each book and jot down possible reading and writing lessons, themes and discussion prompts for social emotional learning conversations.

Many times teachers do not know which books to use for ELA lessons, I envision a library where teachers can come to explore, get ideas, and learning best pedagogical practices.
