Building a Cool and Rewarding PE Through Active Well-being

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the social, emotional, and mental well-being of elementary students, as well as their physical fitness progress. With our outdoor PE classes we are looking to address the needs of our students which is to cool down their environment and bodies to feel successful. We also plan to incorporate the following targets:
Social-Emotional Learning: Incorporating activities and games that promote empathy, cooperation, communication, and self-awareness.
These activities are incorporated in our weekly PE sessions in our outdoor classroom.
Physical Activity:Providing opportunities for students to engage in regular exercise, which has been shown to improve mood, reduce stress, and enhance cognitive function. Our PE classes always includes a warmup (jogging 2 laps then recovering and resting), recovery breaths and a focused activity. With an outdoor classroom students are breathing fresh air and enjoying the atmosphere. With this unique experience we monitor the weather conditions and UV index to help our students to stay hydrated and cool. Our goal is to:
Increase students' social-emotional skills, such as empathy, cooperation, and communication. We will be incorporating this through team sports such as volleyball, soccer, running stamina and annual Turkey Trot race.
Improve students' physical fitness and overall health.
Foster a positive and supportive school environment by creating a cool space for the students and offering an incentive program for classes to earn a shaved ice reward.
Equipment:
The portable fan will be used as a cool off station at my mobile PE cart. This will allow the students to cool off during activities and PE class. The coolers and incentives will serve as a reward for participation. The classes will be rewarded based on their participation and efforts in increasing social-emotional health and well-being through teamwork and fitness participation.
