Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

One of the most important things that a teacher can do is to teach children to work together to build a respectful, equal community. These community skills and knowledge will serve them in and out of every kind of classroom throughout their lives. I teach music to students from Pre-K through 5th grade. Most of our students are from a high-need community. They are not exposed to many positive activities centered solely on becoming respectful human beings and working together in a fun, musical way.

Drum circles are musical activities that encourage groups of students to transform their individual and unique ideas into a united work of art. They learn to share materials respectfully, to wait their turns patiently, and to respect one anothers differences gracefully. They learn more than tolerance. They learn to enjoy and celebrate the unique contributions to the group task. This lesson is then easily transferred into many other situations.

To facilitate a drum circle, we need drums. We have the space and time in class, and I have the knowledge, but we do not have the instruments. These drums will be used with all ages and all students. They will be able to serve hundreds of students in the upcoming years.

Your generous donation will make it possible for me to reach these children on a level that will transcend the classroom. In a state like New York, we need to teach our children that there are many ways to share our feelings, thought, and unique talents with one another.
