Building a Classroom Library

My students need over 30 multi-culturally themed books at a wide variety of reading levels to increase their desire for reading. The titles include "The People Could Fly," "The Last Olympian" and "Coming of Age in America: A Multicultural Anthology."

My Students

My students struggle with reading, and have a hard time finding high-interest books with subjects they are interested in. Without a school library, and with most of our students not living in proximity to a library, it becomes difficult to get a book in their hands!

We are a charter school in Ohio, and this year we added an additional resource room (mine!) due to student need and numbers.

Our school does not have a library, and very few of our students have access to books at home, so they tend not to read! I want them to discover a love of books, but my classroom resources are very limited!

My Project

Of the few books I have, my students pour over them and check them out a couple at a time. Some of my students, however, are having a hard time finding reading material that interests and hooks their love of reading! They have loved the books we've gotten with stories of different cultures, and they are ASKING for books of poetry!

I want to build a love for reading in the students that come to my room, both in an intervention capacity and through the Study Hall Club that I host three times a week.

Our students are hungry to learn, and we just need to put the resources in their hands to build that life-long love of reading!
