This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a 5th Grade Special Education teacher in a public elementary school in the South Bronx, where 97% of our students receive free or reduced-price lunch and 30% of our students live in temporary housing.

For most of our students, this will be their first time in the school building since the COVID-19 school closure in Spring 2020.

My class consists of 62 amazing students who are inquirers, compassionate, and have a great love for learning! As graduating 5th Graders, my students are enthusiastic to return back to the building, so that they can engage in an enriched learning experience and prepare for middle school.

My Project

This is my first year teaching 5th Grade ELA, and I am building a classroom library for my 5th Graders from the ground up. There is no better feeling than getting lost in a good book, and my students absolutely LOVE to read. I hope to build a diverse classroom library with books that my students can see themselves in and deeply engage in.

With a lack of access to books in their communities, my students always look forward to reading in the classroom and often choose to spend their free time engaging in reading.

This library will allows students to explore new interests, increase their reading skills, and just be able to unwind with an interesting book after working hard all day. By donating to this project, you will be helping my students strengthen their love of learning by providing them with a literacy experience that they will use to grow as reading scholars.
