My Students

I teach at a Title I school in the New York City Department of Education. Many of them are learning at school and in person for the first time since the beginning of the pandemic. The school community serves multiethnic and multilingual families, who are predominately from Asia.

My Project

First grade is filled with important and exciting transitions as children begin to develop more academic skills. Students start first grade with a wide range of reading abilities. Some students are beginning to recognize sight words, while others are ready to read beginning chapter books! I would like the opportunity to meet each child where they are in their reading development journey by starting a leveled classroom library where they can choose "just right" books for their independent reading.

I want my students to develop a love for reading, so my hope is to provide a variety of books for them to choose from.

Children are more motivated to read when they are able to select books that are related to their interests. With more practice, students will be able to continue their growth as readers. By supporting my project, you are helping me start a classroom library with age-appropriate leveled books that children will be able to choose from to help develop their reading skills! The colored bins will be used to keep the library organized, so children can independently choose their books and return them to their proper place when they are done. Please help me establish a library that can meet the needs of all my students by donating to this project. Your donations are greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!
