Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students come from low-income households. My 1st graders attend a Title I school in Texas. They have a variety of different economic backgrounds with 100% receiving free breakfast and over 90% receiving free/reduced lunch. Many students receive backpack food on the weekends since our school also runs a food pantry for our families. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. My students walk into our classroom every day full of life, ready to learn, and excited for what is in store for them that day. I tell them often, “Don’t tell the other classes I’m saying this because I don’t want to hurt their feelings but….you’re the best class in the world!”

My Project

Students will use the new materials to read. They will read in the morning and in the afternoon. They will read when they finish work early. They will read together and alone. I want to create a library environment with book bins that is easy to access and interesting to my students.

The day you go from a non-reader to a reader is magical.

We all remember that moment. I want all my students to have a chance at that moment. I don't want a small classroom library to keep these students from that moment. I want to be able to provide them with books to read that will instill a life-long love of reading. I want them to become successful readers!
