This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My reasoning behind this project is due to many students have confessed to me that they have reached high school not ever finishing a book they started. With the digital age almost entirely phasing out the need for physical copies of books, students rarely get the chance to experience getting lost in the pages of a book. Growing up, books were my escape and they helped me find my passion for learning. Searching through libraries of books for the “right one” opened up a door that ultimately led me to want to be a teacher so that I could help my future students learn to love reading and discover their passion in life the same way I did.

This project is inspired by my love for reading but also by how my students have voiced that they are thankful for being given the opportunity to read something “that isn’t just boring reading for class”.

My goal as a first-year teacher is to ensure that I am able to apply the knowledge I’ve acquired throughout my undergraduate and credential program. One lesson I am hoping to implement is the Year-Long Independent Reading Project. This project will enable my students to explore a variety of curated books from numerous genres with a book report requiring students to detail how each story helped them develop their reading skills. With your generous donation, you will not only help create a reading-rich environment for students but also give them the chance to fall in love with a fictional world or explore the journey of self-discovery through the eyes of a character they can relate to!
