Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a fourth-grade ELL teacher in Elmhurst, Queens, in a Title One school. Ninety-eight percent of my students qualify for free lunch. My school is also one of the most overcrowded schools in the entire city. I have wonderful students who want to learn, and my classroom is a kind of amazing fourth-grade mini United Nations. My students are the children of immigrant familes from all over the world. They are encouraged by supportive parents, but I am lacking classroom resources to help them achieve success in school. With a class of over thirty children, I often have at least two-dozen different native languages, and each student reads English at a different level. I am asking for funding to purchase books for my classroom so that students can find appropriate books for their individual reading levels. I have been teaching over ten years, and each year I have added to my classroom library, but there are never enough books. I am asking for three book collections produced by Scholastic. These collections are nonfiction and cover such diverse and interesting topics as the Mayflower, Helen Keller, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Thomas Edison, George Washington and the solar system. These collections are leveled, so they include books at various levels of difficulty that will provide interesting and challenging reading for the entire year. With collections such as these, I know that every child in my class can find a book that is "just right," and that having the opportunity to read exciting books at the appropriate level of challenge will help make them confident, engaged readers. Thank you.
