Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are from the South Bronx and they are resilient, driven, creative, and genuine. They are also extremely vulnerable, being from the poorest congressional school district in the country and one of the hardest hit neighborhoods from COVID 19 in all of New York.

They deeply value education and most want to continue their studies in college upon graduating from high school.

Most of my students will be first-generation college students from African American and Latinx families. They are committed to positive change in their communities as community organizers, social justice activists, volunteers, and interns; they are the future of NYC.

My Project

I work in the Student Success Center at our high school, helping our students realize their post-secondary plans. Most of our students will be the first in their family to attend college and we help them to navigate through the complex application process. In the past, our students have achieved admission into prestigious colleges and have earned thousands of dollars in scholarships.

This year is one of great uncertainty and I want our students to be able to get the support they need with college and career planning in the safest possible environment.

Our office is located in our library, a space that houses a classroom and other offices. I work with three other counselors, and we hope to be able to social distance in the space while continuing our hands-on approach to counseling. Air purifiers and sneeze guards will be key to creating a secure environment. The safety of my students and their families is my top priority and having sneeze guards and the best air filtration system available is something they deserve. They should be able to focus on planning a bright future in these dark times without being nervous that they are compromising their health.
