Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach freshmen English at an inner city, high-needs school. The vision of our school is for each student to attend college, and for most of my students, they will be the first in their families to do so.

In the last two years, our school has seen a large influx of non-native English speakers. These students are highly motivated but many also lack literacy skills in their native language. Studies have shown that students fluent in one language acquire a second language far more readily. I would love to help these students achieve greater fluency in both English and Spanish and put them one step closer to attending college.

To do so, we need an audio listening center with where students can listen to a fluent speaker while they read along with the written text. The titles in Spanish will help improve their native language acquisition. Additionally, the bilingual books will help my intermediate students go to the next level. For my more advanced English Language Learners, I would like to offer them titles in English about their own culture, which they will be eager to read about. By offering them high interest titles, it will help them continue to expand their knowledge of the English language instead of plateauing. By improving their literacy skills, my students will be more successful in all their classes from History to Science.
