My students are a bright and busy group. We are from a small town with limited resources. Because of budget restraints we have gone to a four day week. While the change has been fun and well received, we still have many things to do.
I want to make sure my students are ready for the world.
I want to introduce my students to as many authors as possible. In order to do that my shelves need to be more diverse. ALL of my students deserve to be represented in the literature in their classrooms and the plan is to make that happen!
My Project
I am requesting books and a new book shelf. Last year it was decided that our school library no longer served much of a purpose. As a department we did not agree. We were tasked with sorting through the hundreds of books in our library and recycling those that were worn out or out of date. Those that we deemed worth saving were to be put in our classrooms. Thus began the reinvigoration of the classroom library at our school.
While I was able to save a shelf worth of material, our classroom library is still lacking.
I spent the summer searching for new titles and diverse authors to add to our collection.
I purchased 35 new titles with authors and story lines that better represent our student population. Students have been all over our new books and I could not be happier to share with them. However, I've run out of shelf space! ELA is not and should not be strictly forced reading for particular passages.
While that is a big part of our studies, reading for pleasure should also be an important part of who we are and who we will be. I hope to purchase another shelf to house our collection and a few more books that I was unable to purchase this summer.
