My Students

Reading and understanding music is such an abstract concept! My students sing and play, but struggle to translate those activities into meaningful written notation. I needed to find a more concrete, more fool-proof way to teach rhythm notation.

We are a Title One school in a high-poverty area of our school district.

Our students work very hard and we have a very good school. In spite of our funding challenges and our students' socio-economic background, we want to provide them with the best education possible and the highest level of access to fine arts education that we can. In the limited contact time that we have for subjects like music and art, we are always looking for creative ways to make our subject and learning goals more fun, exciting and engaging for all students.

My Project

I will create a learning center where students can build their own rhythm pieces in a fool-proof way and then translate those creations into written music. They will use the 4-block as the foundation and then add the smaller blocks on top, each smaller block representing a different note or rest value. Since the foundation contains 4 spaces and they will need to build within that foundation, filling each spot with notes or rests, they can create multi-measure rhythm pieces by building their blocks up from the foundation. From here, it will be easier to translate those buildings onto paper and do all sorts of things. We can create ostinati or text and play independent parts on instruments. We will only be limited by our imaginations. This first step of understanding how rhythms are created and the rules that govern notation will be overcome with ease so that we can tackle a wider range of concepts, each student with his/her own personal composition.

Many of our children use legos and are familiar with this toy.

With a few simple guidelines, they will all understand how this "game" is played. Children learn best through play. The more we can bring a play-like atmosphere to the classroom, the more we enhance a child's understanding of the world. Our children have so few opportunities in school for play. How can we pass up the chance here to encourage directed, educational play in the name of developing the next generation of great musicians.
