My Students

"The idea of the extraordinary happening in the context of the ordinary is what's fascinating to me." -Chris Van Allsburg Elementary school is one of the few places where your mind can wander and explore in order to make the impossible seem possible and the ordinary seem extraordinary.

My students love to explore and read fantasy stories just as much as any other 4th graders.

Van Allsburg claims that he "write[s] for what's left of the eight-year-old still rattling around inside my head." Very few authors understand the connection between the child's need for imagination and how to build their comprehension of a story. In Jumanji, Van Allsburg's most famous book, a plain, boring board game comes alive. In writing this, every eight-year-old's dreams came true. Students of all ages adore his drawings and the imagination used in his story making. Moreover, Van Allsburg uses sparse writing combined with powerful words in order to challenge students to imagine and create this world he has invited them to enter. With such few words, students must implement all of the reading strategies learned throughout their academic careers in order to fully comprehend the text.

My Project

It is my hope that I will be able to use these requested texts in shared reading activities. Compared to a novel, picture books use only a few words to express an idea. At that point, it is up to the reader to form a conclusion after only a few pages. Picture books are a great way to build and implement students' reading strategies daily. I have also requested multiple copies of a couple of van Allsburg's most celebrated texts. It is my hope that students will be able to work and read in small groups to better understand these texts. Small group work bears fruitful discussion and allows each student to interact with the text.

My students are ESL children who do not interact with the English language beyond our school.

Their parents do not have the language skills to ask them questions about their reading and thereby reinforce lessons learned in school. During the school day, it is essential that my students are motivated to read and utilize reading strategies at home. This can only occur if students love reading and imagining at an early age so they develop a passion to learn and explore.
