This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our 3rd grade class is full of dynamic personalities bursting with curiosity. Creative, funny, dramatic, kind and helpful are a few words to describe our students. These are also words that describe the stories they would love to read about! We are building life-long readers with a goal of cultivating a genuine interest of reading in each student.

In our classroom we have readers ranging from a level A to a level S, which means our students are reading on levels that correspond to Kindergarten to 6th grade.

We are an ICT (Integrated Co-Teaching) classroom of two teachers, located in the Coney Island section of Brooklyn, NY. We are also a Title I School. Our third graders consist of both students with learning disabilities and non-disabled students who learn together in an inclusive environment.

Access to books or other reading material outside of the classroom is very limited for many of our students. At random, when new books are sporadically added to our class library, students are eager to take turns reading them if it peeks their interest. We are making a great effort to provide books of all levels and interests to our students who are becoming avid readers!

My Project

These books will help our students become avid readers who realize the power of reading. We want to create a class culture where independent reading is valued by encouraging students, even those who struggle with reading, to enter the reading life. Having a rich classroom library with books on a wide range of reading levels and diverse topics will promote this goal. All of these books have been chosen with my students in mind, and I have also asked them what type of books they would enjoy reading.

Third grade is a pivotal year for reading literacy because it is the final year children are learning to read, after which students are reading to learn.

At this point in the school year, most students in our class have grown tremendously in their reading abilities and are now moving into the reading to learn stage. These books will give students a journey into themselves as much as the journey in the stories. They will boost their imagination, creativity and allow them to explore worlds they may have never dreamed of!

Please help us continue to build our classroom library and reach the interests of all readers. Help us to enhance the print-rich classroom that we strive to create.
