Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I am a co-teacher in a English language learner first grade classroom! We work hard to develop phonics, reading, and writing skills for the majority of the school day. We need dramatic and active play materials so my students are provided an opportunity to play and use their imagination.

My students are from all over the world - Vietnam, China, Cambodia, Burma, Malaysia, Mexico, Honduras, the Dominican Republic, Pakistan, and Nepal.

They are refugees and immigrants who are learning English and love to come to school! However, their life experiences have limited their exposure to play and creative expression. They need opportunities to use their speaking and language in an informal setting to express themselves. These foundational skills allow students to problem solve and explore their creativity. Building social and expressive language is fundamental to improving reading and writing skills.

My Project

Center time is essential in first grade. While my co-teacher and I teach guided reading and implement interventions, students rotate through eight different centers. While many of our centers help to solidify phonics and reading strategies, we need to add centers that encourage active and dramatic play. Students will be able to build and create using the building table. Students will be able to act out everyday experiences using the community helpers costumes at the drama center. Students can form letters and numbers using the sand table. These centers will provide the students with experiences that they need in order to understand and progress in school.

Donations to this project will dramatically improve student success.

Currently, when we ask our English language learners to use their imagination to create or build, they do not know how to respond. Their difficult and often impoverished childhood has limited their exposure to role play and creative expression. They desperately need this opportunity to play as a developmental milestone in a young child's life.
