My Students

My rural students need to move from picture books into chapter books. They are ready for new challenges in reading but the library is inadequate as the average date of materials is 1985. Help me help them by providing access to Junie B., The Magic Tree House, Boxcar Children, and Hank the Cowdog.

My students are loving and kind to each other and to their teachers.

I am new to the community and they have welcomed me with open arms, quite literally. They live in a small rural community and attend school in very small impoverished district. Many of the students are from second and third generation farming families and are related to each other. These students do not have cable and Internet access like other communities. They are involved in their school and community. Community and family are their foundations. My students deserve to have better but they do not whine about not having what they need. They ask for the new materials they see on TV and when they visit stores but they do not complain. I admire their spirit each day and want to provide for their needs.

My Project

The foundation of education is the ability to read. Many of my students are reading below their grade level partially because interesting materials that are relevant to them are unavailable. I am asking them what they would like to read and they are telling me! My students need easy chapter books such as Nancy Drew, Junie B. Jones, and Geronimo Stilton to move from picture books into sustained reading focused on third and fourth grade students. These books will allow students to move from fifteen minute readers to lifelong readers. Many of these students have potential to succeed in life if we can help them now. The earlier we influence their desire for education the more successful they will be.

This project is so important to my students future.

Without the ability to read well they will have limited opportunities available to them. Reading is the foundation in which education builds upon. Reading exposes children to the world and opens their imagination to become the architects of their future. Books need to be relevant and interesting to pull them in and open their minds. This project will provide much needed materials to the school library for students.
