This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Maya Angelou once said, "Any book that helps a child to form a habit of reading, to make reading one of his deep and continuing needs, is good for him." Fostering a "habit of reading" is something I aim to do with all of my 7th and 8th graders during our 9 weekly Independent Reading periods.

Our school no longer has a functioning library, which means that my classroom is the main source of books for kids.

Together, my students and I created a Wish List of all the kinds of books we'd like to see in our classroom library, and I can safely say, there's a great deal of desire for more books! Our community of readers includes a significant number of students with disabilities and English Language Learners. We not only need books that will meet our varied needs, but also books that will spark a desire to read! Additionally, as a Renewal School, we are experiencing many big changes! One of those changes includes setting aside time during the day for Independent Reading. Independent Reading allows kids to choose the books they feel drawn to, which means a greater investment on the child's part, as well as a guaranteed differentiated reading experience. Choice and variety are the name of the game, especially for struggling readers.

My Project

All in all, I'm requesting 126 books that span a variety of genres and topics for the purpose of Independent Reading. I asked my students for input and I also researched titles that are of high interest to middle school readers as well as leveled appropriately for a diverse group of levels. It was my aim to order doubles of titles whenever possible so as to encourage paired reading. Paired reading is an excellent way to practice fluency while reading aloud to each other, as well as checking for understanding together. Additionally, graphic novels on my list not only appeal to middle schoolers who are used to working in a visual medium, but also aid in comprehension for English Learners and students with disabilities. Other genres include: adventure series such as the Lunar Chronicles, sports biographies like Who Was Roberto Clemente? and Who Was Muhammad Ali?, and leveled guided reading books.

My kids deserve the best books possible, and I will be unable to provide this without your help!

Donations to this project will hugely improve our classroom! As I've mentioned earlier, Independent Reading is about cultivating a curiosity for and enjoyment of reading, and we will have a hard time doing that if there are limited options of lackluster quality.
