Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 9th and 10th grade biology to 75 English Language Learners (ELLs) at Flushing International High School (FIHS) in Flushing, New York. FIHS is a 3-year old empowerment school that serves only immigrant students with less than 2 years of education in English. As a result, the entire population of the school are ELLs. As a member of the Internationals Network of Schools, our mission is to teach English in context of the subject area courses. Students learn English and complete their high school requirements simultaneously. At our school, students engage in experiential, interdisciplinary group projects and hands-on learning so as to create shared experiences that help all levels of students learn complex content, communication skills, and language. Handling and experimenting with insects and spiders is an extremely hands-on, communal activity that helps build vocabulary, communicate numerous key biological concepts, and teach basic to complex scientific principals. I have found that many of my students have potentially negative associations with insects. Acting as responsible and humane stewards of these hearty and charismatic critters helps alleviate student dislike of the insect world and fosters an appreciation for all forms of life. Our Hissing Cockroaches are already a hit with some formerly squeamish students! These critters would help me teach stewardship, animal care, and the science of adaptation during our introductory unit and beyond. Some experiments we have done with these insects in the past include the penny-pull, where the strength of beetles is compared to humans, and food and environmental preference experiments. In addition, my fellow science teachers (each with 75 students of their own) and my after-school Science Challenge Club could also use the animals, extending their usefulness. Your financial help will provide a lasting experience for a group of wonderfully eager and hard-working students. Thank you so much for your help.
