Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Bugs, crystals, magnets, microscopes ... all things that are fascinating to kids and that they want to learn about! Some students learn by listening, others by seeing, and others by touching. Deaf and hard of hearing students often are in the last group, needing to touch and manipulate objects to learn about them. I am a teacher of deaf and hard of hearing kids in kindergarten and 1st grade. We are a district program, meaning that deaf and hard of hearing students from all across the city who use sign language are sent to our school so that they can receive all of their education in sign language and interact with adults and peers who can directly communicate with them.

The deaf and hard of hearing students in my classroom love to investigate the world around them. Many of these students have limited language and have not been able to ask questions about their world around them as they are growing up. Yet, they love to explore, touch, feel, manipulate everything they can get their hands on! My goal is for these students to be able to explore their world and learn about a variety of science concepts, like plants, animals, weight, color, light, or temperature. In order to teach students science concepts, I need to have objects and tools that students can touch, feel, manipulate, and use to explore the world and begin to become scientists. Currently, I have very limited science tools and manipulatives for the students to use.

I would like to obtain a variety of scientific tools and manipulatives to use in a kindergarten and first grade class to motivate students to learn about science. These tools would consist of a kit of different magnets where students could learn about what is/is not magnetic, magnetic poles, and how compasses use magnets to work. We also would use a microscope to see plants and vegetable parts up close plus the small parts of bugs. A butterfly nursery could help us see a caterpillar spin a cocoon and turn into a butterfly. Prisms and color paddles would help us change and play with light and color. Measuring tapes, measuring cups, thermometers, and a balance would help us measure, classify, and describe objects in our world. Plus, every scientist needs the proper equipment, safety goggles! Some plastic storage boxes would help us organize, sort, store, and keep all this science equipment safe.

Your support of this project will provide many deaf and hard of hearing students the chance to explore their world hands-on and begin to learn science concepts. This will lead to a future generation of deaf and hard of hearing students who will become more interested in science and the world around them.
