Bugs are Cool? - Learning about Insects as Class Pets

My students need insect habitats including water dish, substrate (mulch), food, drift wood, and terrarium setup supplies to create a home for insects in our classroom as students who are informed are students who are empowered.

My Students

My students are ready and eager to learn. We are a Title I school with 100% of the students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Our students come from a rural community with parents who want them to succeed and the best for them in life. My students are in first grade.

We enjoy learning in a nontraditional environment and using technology to explore the world around us.

My students are excited and love the opportunity to explore the world around them. They have been learning to work collaboratively and how to find solutions to real-world problems.

My Project

My students need to learn the importance of bugs in our world. Learning about animals is part of our NGSS standards for first grade. Specifically, animal adaptations and how they contribute to our environment.

Being scientists in the classroom, students learn the important work that they do in their careers and these classroom pets will help students to understand just that.

This project will help my students to get small terrariums that we can keep at each table. Students will get to experience the responsibility of taking care of an animal, their habitat, and how they move. We will keep a diary of our insects and write about them each week. Each week, we will record how much our insects have grown, if they have had babies, and one fun fact about them.

The materials for this project include small habitats for students to watch insects and the materials to build those habitats. We will house insects in our classroom and take care of them. To do so, each habitat will need rocks, soil, moss, realistic tree branches, food, and water dishes. We will make 4 habitats so we can keep one at each table.

The skills that my students learn from this project will help them in their future careers and lives.
