This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Have you ever witnessed a butterfly emerge from a chrysalis? I have with my little ones and it is something that changes my life each time I see it all over again. It is one project that I feel, personally, compelled to share with my children. Many of the first grade children in my urban New Jersey classroom are economically disadvantaged. The parents work just to make ends meet and there is little money left to enrich the lives of the children. But like children everywhere...they are naturally curious and excited about learning.

Like many urban schools, we face serious budget cuts and these cuts often limit the educational experiences of the children. Since the beginning of my teaching career, my students and I have witnessed the metamorphosis from the caterpillar to butterfly. In fact, this past year, we were able to watch several butterflies emerge from their chrysalises...truly a life-altering experience. I would like for my students to be able to experience that once again, deepening their experience by studying ladybugs and ants as well. I believe, that taking part in these exciting opportunities, my students will gain a lifelong lesson in compassion which will transfer over to their lives.

In order for this project to be successful, we need bugs! Of course the children will learn from text books and lessons, but they will learn even more by observing and caring for the actual creatures! Through studying the metamorphoses of insects and reading about them through quality literature...both fiction and nonfiction...my students will truly understand the amazing life cycle and, as much as first graders are able, gain a greater understanding of our world and all of its beauty.

Your generosity in supporting this proposal will make it possible for my little ones to experience a piece of nature that we take for granted. I have discovered, through 17 years of teaching, that this particular lesson is one which has never been forgotten!
