This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Play is a child's work". -Jean Piaget I am a Lead Teacher in a Pre-K full day classroom in an elementary school in the south Bronx, NY. The school is located in a poorest congressional district in our nation! I teach all subject areas, and want to make the learning fun for the young children!

My students are a diverse group of curious children.

They love visual and hands-on learning! The children have different learning styles, and many have special needs. My students come from many different backgrounds. Many of the children live in shelters, and neighborhood housing projects. I would like to increase their exposure to living things in nature.

My Project

These materials will be for all four of my schools' Pre-K classes to enjoy and learn from. We will have the children observe how the caterpillars move and grow. Then we will all witness the metamorphosis, when the caterpillars turn into chrysalis. The children, (and adults), will then wait until the special day when they become butterflies! We will watch the butterflies use their protasis, (or straw like mouth), to drink the juice from sliced oranges we provide for them. After a week or so of enjoying, (and learning about), our butterflies, we will set a day to release them outside-so they can continue the life cycle.

I believe that when you experience something, you internalize it.

Instead of reading about, (or watching a video), about life cycles, and/or insects; The children will have a hands on learning opportunity to see the process for themselves! Also, I am sure that having the live insects in class, will generate more questioning from the children, that will take us all on a learning journey that we could not even plan!
