More than two-thirds of our student body are identified as eligible FARMs (Free and Reduced Meals) students for the past two years.
Seventy two percent (72%) are African American; twenty two percent (22%) Hispanic; four percent (4%) White and two percent (2%) Asian.
Although most of our students are from low income households, it doesn't hinder them to strive to become active learners and to have passion for reading, exploration and research.
I meet all of them every week. They really love going to the Media Center not only to get books but also to learn about the different Makerspace lessons I prepare for them.
Since I only ordered three (3) standalone VR headsets for my classroom, I need to one (1) more headset to have enough number for my students to share in one class. With only three headsets, it will take a lot of time for a student to take his/her turn in using it. A station with four (4) Day Dream VR headsets will be a dream come true for my class. The other materials added are needed for us to have direct learning without disrupting the experience and to guide and monitor student focus.
With the VR standalone headset, the students will experience a virtual field trip by visiting historical landmarks at different time period around the world using the Google Expedition app.
But before they can experience it, the students need to make a budget plan on how much money they will need to get to that place including the transportation fare, hotel accommodation and food. They need to do a research about the place and the total cost they need. Each group will be given a specific amount for a budget and the assigned historical location that they need to visit. The groups who will be able to make a good and sound budget plan, will enjoy the breathtaking educational experience with 110 degrees field of view of their journey using the VR standalone headset.
And since they will be visiting different countries in different time periods, the students will compare and contrast the changes in terms of the value of money, inflation, and types of transportation and accommodation available. For long term impact of the lessons, the students will revisit the same place in the following years and identify the differences before and after, then make the necessary adjustments on their budget plan.
