Learning how to read and write is one of the most important skills in life. It empowers us to learn about the world and communicate with others each and every day. And it gives us the ability to leave an impression upon the world around us.
The students in my class are amazing little learners who are just beginning their journey in education.
They are 3, 4 and 5 year olds who come to school each day excited and ready to learn. Our classroom is blended, meaning half our our class has special needs of some sort. Some students have language or communication needs, others have some sort of developmental delay. But all of our students are learning something important. And each is proud to work hard and support the other students in our class as they work to achieve their own personal goals.
Our classroom is located in the largest, oldest, and most economically distressed public housing development in our city. Many of our students lack the early opportunities to develop language and communication skills that are so important in the early stages of development. This makes our job in the Pre-K classroom so much more important, as we work to catch up with basic language, communication and writing skills.
My Project
These materials will be used each and every day to foster our students' ability to communicate, speak and write. We will use the alphabet shakers to learn about the letters that make up words. We will use the communication games and pocket charts to build upon our language-rich classroom environment. The writing materials will support our journal routines and build upon how we learn to use the drawings and writings we create to inform and communicate with others. Larger pencils and grippers will support our students who are struggling with fine motor skills. And the letter centers will support our students who are beginning to learn how to string letters together to form words.
This project will support all of our students at their various stages of early development.
Students will be able to interact with language, literacy and writing skills in a hands-on, interactive manner. And they will be able to learn very early on just how fun learning can be!
