Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Give this project a boost!
A chain reaction of support starts with one share.
The students at our middle school are bright, hard-working, and enthusiastic about learning. They frequently come to the library to visit us on their own time to browse the shelves, work on class assignments, read, or complete projects in the creator space. Our students enjoy the structure of school because many of their lives are chaotic outside of it.
More than 70% of our students come from low-income households.
I am fully aware that their basic needs may not always be met when they arrive at school each morning. I admire these kids for their dedication and determination to succeed.
The population at our school is very diverse and many of these students are speakers of other languages. Our goal this year is to make connections with all of these students, no matter where they come from or what language they speak. I often think that is what our kids need the most; someone that doesn't have to care about them, but genuinely does.
My Project
Studies show that reading helps students to expand their vocabularies, improve their visualization skills, become better writers, and enhance their imaginations. Our book club will also improve our students' social and conversational skills, since they will be discussing the books they've read with teachers and other students. However, we cannot hold our book club without the books!
These books, which were chosen by our kids, will enable us to hold our book club, encourage meaningful conversations between students, and improve our students' reading skills.
With the influx of technology in today's world, children are not inclined to read for entertainment. Holding this book club will allow these students to feel the enjoyment that comes out of reading for fun. Putting these books in the hands of our students will also encourage them to read in the future.
